As the pictures show , our foundation and footings are going in quickly. Soon these foundation walls will be waterproofed and back-filled, bringing us back to ground-level. By mid-August, forms measuring over 40-feet tall will begin to be poured and the walls of the museum - patterned by a custom form liner -- will start to emerge in dramatic, vertical sections. |

What a difference a day can make! The excavators have arrived and they are going about their work - digging deep into the earth to prepare for our concrete foundations. Although the museum will not technically have a basement - just a crawlspace to house and access mechanical, plumbing, and other systems - the plans require a “hole” roughly 125 x 150 x 15 feet deep, so this work is fairly dramatic. It’s exciting to finally get a sense of the footprint of the museum which seems to fit like a glove on our amazing site. |

More work continues at our site, namely the relocation of numerous underground utility lines -- and their respective aboveground boxes, which are presently located at what will soon be our main entrance. (These "old" utility lines and boxes were actually installed just a few years ago to service the Denver Art Museum's Daniel Libeskind-designed Hamilton Building - if only we knew!) Several telephone lines, and their attendant poles, are also coming down, which, for the first time, will give unfettered views of the magnificent west façade of the Hamilton Building. The whole area is looking quite clear and awaiting the beginnings of our excavation, slated to begin in April. |

CSM director Dean Sobel just completed some exciting work on the museum model, housed at Allied Works Architecture’s Portland office, exploring various curatorial concepts for the inaugural exhibitions, as well as testing the final location of doorways, freestanding walls, walkways, etc. These investigations were tremendously productive and predict a very dramatic presentation of this extraordinary collection. |

The two small buildings on our site have been completely demolished and sorted through so materials like metal and concrete could be recycled. As of today, the site is now a flat swath of land, awaiting additional site work (such as the relocation of existing utilities) continuing in January. |

Since Clyfford Still never relied on traditions, CSM’s groundbreaking abandoned the usual gold-shovel-in-the ground approach and opted, instead, to begin demolition as part of the ceremony. The rumble of the first “strikes” at the existing buildings on the site was accompanied by fireworks, startling a few visitors who thought the excavator was “simply” going to dig a big hole. It was a beautiful Denver day, with over 300 people in attendance. |
